Reaching Your Peak in 2018: Saturn in Capricorn

qtq80 Lcw48M 150x150 - Reaching Your Peak in 2018: Saturn in CapricornYou’re sitting at the foot of a mountain. At your side, wiry and steady, Saturn the Timekeeper is neatly folding up the multi-hued garb of Sagittarius the Philosopher that he’s worn for 3 years. On 12/19/2017, he will be donning the commanding robes of Capricorn until 12/17/2020.

“I have 3 questions for you,” he says, in a voice like quiet thunder. “One: How have you proved yourself to yourself this year?” Two: What new beliefs can you can commit to and live by as a result?” Three: “Are you ready to climb this mountain?”

You look up, straining your vision. The mountain, defined by stark shadows and hungry light, is tattooed by the fall and rise of twisting paths. Dense clouds bodyguard its peak. Simultaneously, you’re struck by twin jolts of emotional lightning-excitement and fear.

Say “yes,” to the challenge of Saturn in Capricorn, and you earn self-respect, dignity and wisdom. Remain at the base of the mountain and emotional arthritis may well set in. You know which choice is right for you.

Standing, you strap on your backpack. It is sturdy and well equipped with determination, focus and faith. In parting, Saturn presses a small bottle into your hand. It is unbreakable and will never run dry. It is filled with the elixir of courage.

Now, your first step. Beneath your feet, the mountain trembles, a growl of welcome. There is no turning back. Nor would you want to.

Eagle-eyed Saturn squints into hazy sun as you ascend. He knows that you will succeed.

So do I.

In fierce joy and celebration,

Joyce

Saturn in Capricorn: Proving Yourself to Yourself

qtq80 LhkF2N 150x150 - Saturn in Capricorn: Proving Yourself to YourselfYou’re sitting at the foot of a mountain. At your side, wiry and steady, sits Saturn the Timekeeper. He is neatly folding up the gypsy garb of Sagittarius the Philosopher, preparing to don Capricorn’s commanding robes on12/30/2017.

“I have 3 questions for you.” His voice is quiet thunder. “One: How have you proved yourself to yourself this year?” Two: What new beliefs can you can commit to and live by as a result?” Three: “Are you ready to climb this mountain?”

The mountain, defined by stark shadows and hungry light, is tattooed by the fall and rise of twisting paths. Dense clouds bodyguard its peak. Twin jolts of emotional lightning strike you simultaneously-excitement and fear.

Say “yes,” to the journey, and you earn self-respect, dignity and wisdom. Carry with you the tools of determination, focus and faith. Follow your heart’s unerring compass-it cannot fail you. If you choose to remain at the base of the mountain, emotional arthritis might set in.

Now it’s time. Standing, you strap on your backpack. It is sturdy and well equipped. In parting, Saturn presses a small bottle into your hand. It cannot be shattered, nor will it run dry. It is filled with the elixir of courage.

Get into the car and drive on the wild side!

It’s time to shift gears from 2nd to 5th. If you’ve been moving through life at 140 Horsepower, upgrade to 510 HP. The pedal’s to the metal as you swerve into the fast lane-and you’re jonesin’ for still more speed. Passions run high and hot, tempers short and quick. You don’t want to behave. Patience is just a concept. Recklessness courses through your veins.

Take charge of your life–do it your way. Veer off onto the road less taken. Honor the fierce desire for independence. Refuse to cater to rules that choke off your authenticity. And hey! Keep in mind that you’re not the only one accelerating. This urgent itch is under everyone else’s skin. As you hit the road, keep this quote in mind: “People don’t do things to you. They do things for themselves.” (Author Unknown)

During May and June, hot, insistent astrological winds strike, fierce and adamant harbingers of change. Turn into them and you’ll be standing eye-to-eye with your inner warrior. This will inspire right action.  Cower under their force, and you’ll be stalked by meaningless conflict and confrontation.

On 5/27/10, insurgent Uranus hurtles into “me first” daredevil Aries. Judicious Jupiter treks into the same sign on 6/6/10, expanding the need for autonomy and passionate individuation. As Eleanor Roosevelt once declared, “You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do.”

Don’t look for approval. You don’t need it. Pioneer new wild, wooly and downright magical frontiers. Liberate, individuate, live your passions. Feeling your heart race? That’s how alive you are. Now buckle up and head on out!

With zest and zeal,

Joyce

April/May 2010 Astrological News

Here’s April/May astrological news, just part of what you’ll find in my monthly newsletter. To subscribe, tweet, FB or email me with your contact info at joyce@partnersinhealing.com and you’ll get the next one due out mid-May.  Enjoy!

“For everything, there is a season…” I sit here gazing out at my garden, ocean winds untangling poplar tree leaves. The poplar itself, which itself stands a story above my 2-story Victorian, doesn’t mind: the winds shake debris from the branches and lightens its leaves, which chatter like castanets.

The winds of change persist in our lives, sometimes in gusts of fear, at other times in whispers of faith. Brace against them and your branches might fracture. Move with them and you learn to bend, flex and release. Trust the strength of your roots to hold you steady. As Ram Dass said, “Be here now.”

Following are tips to help you stay fluid and grounded:

Mercury, the planet of communication, is moving backwards (retrograding) from April 17-May 11. In slow-moving, practical Taurus, the key is to think cat: don’t hurry, enjoy simple pleasures, relax. It’s best to not begin (or buy anything electronic or sign contracts) during this time, so chill out. Get into your garden. Get a massage. Go for a hike. Really taste each mouthful of food. For more details on Mercury retrograde, check out this link http://joycevanhorn.wordpress.com/2009/12/12/mercury-retrograde-whats-to-love/

Disciplinary Saturn did an about face (retrograded) for the last time into analytic Virgo on April 7th. Avoid emotional and professional potholes by lending a critical eye to what you implemented before this period. You’ll be better able to catch and clean up discrepancies you may not have otherwise noticed. On May 30, Saturn goes direct. If you’ve done your homework (which Saturn will always reward), you’ll have worked the kinks out of projects and goals so that they can manifest smoothly and successfully.

On April 19th, the Sun lazes into earthy, sensual Taurus until May 20th. This, too, is a cycle that smiles lazily and says, “Give yourself a break.” Eat a peach so ripe with juice that it spills down your chin. Roll down a green, grassy hill and don’t worry about grass stains. You have a body–enjoy it!

Rule-abiding Saturn and rule-breaking Uranus lock horns for the last time beginning April 26th. This can result in power struggles, both with other people and within yourself. Stop and ask yourself what you’re fighting for. Is it really so important? Is a victory necessary? Compromise is optimum, but it won’t always work-you may have to simply walk away. Not all battles need to be won. Remain objective and you’ll come away with a clearer awareness of what power truly means for you. Let the winds of change clear out what’s extraneous, whether gale-force winds or soft breezes. Trust that their currents are guiding you to exactly where is best for you. Go make interesting mistakes-and don’t apologize for them. You are part of nature…and you’re a force of it as well. Never lose faith. There’s always another adventure on the horizon.

Love and laughter,

Joyce

Jupiter in Pisces: Telling Your Truth, Dreaming Your Dreams

Mark Twain once said, “If you tell the truth, you never have to remember anything.” What he didn’t add was, “and it won’t always win you popularity contests.”

To ignore truth is dangerous. Politeness can be toxic. I often encourage clients to speak their feelings at the time they feel them, even if they’re not totally clear. It’s okay to begin a sentence with, “I’m sensing something here,” or “What’s true for me is…,” or “What you said just hurt me/made me sad/angry.”

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve participated in groups. They have been my bliss and my folly. Why? Because I didn’t know how to maintain my autonomy within them. Instead I would shut up, agree when I really disagreed and keep my ideas and opinions to myself. Inevitably one of two things would happen: I’d leave, feeling hurt, misunderstood and excluded. Or what I’d kept caged would fly out of my mouth like a wild beast on the rampage.

These days I try to say what I’m feeling when I feel it. I have opinions. I set boundaries. As the community leader of the Northern California Steven Forrest Apprenticeship Program http://www.gossamerrings.com/forrest.php that’s an essential part of the job. Someone inevitably disagrees. I don’t win all of the popularity contests. But I do sleep better at night.

On January 17, 2010 Jupiter, the planet of possibilities and expansion, moved into Pisces. Jupiter is generous. Whatever sign it’s in, wherever it is in your chart, is where you can expand your horizons. If it’s moving through your career sector, you have a better chance to get that dream job. If you’re looking for love, Jupiter opens the hallowed doorway and says, “Look for the best of the best. You don’t have to settle.” In Pisces, Jupiter heralds a time of seeking truth through connection with the divine. Piscean energy brings an awareness of the unity of all things and beings. Pisces is mystical, magical and inspirational.

But here is the shadow of Jupiter in Pisces: you hit the bottle. Lose yourself in romantic fantasy. While away the time with petty distractions (think whipping out the credit card and charging madly away in a delirium of excess). There is the danger of merging rather than emerging as an individual within the whole. Life can turn nightmarish, fraught with bigger-than-life illusions and delusions.

The voice of the sacred speaks differently to each of us. Trust your own interpretation of what you intuit. Jupiter seeks truth and meaning. It breathes this need into the Piscean state, where time becomes irrelevant: music sweeps you away. You stare out at the ocean, mesmerized. You become one with God-force. Poetry, meditation, sleep…they will take you there. Surrender consciously to this state of pure unconsciousness and generous Jupiter doubles your luck. Then healing happens and truth flows into you. And, when you speak out, you share that truth with others. And all are healed.

So trust the intuitive process. Enter into altered states of experience in order to access your highest potential. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day—but it was built on a dream. Therefore, trust your dreams…and dream big.

Mercury Retrograde: What’s to Love?

Here it is again…like taxes and death–Mercury goes retrograde. Everyone groans and shudders in horror, hoping that flights aren’t canceled or delayed,  that their computer doesn’t have a breakdown or there won’t be a communication glitch with their sweetheart or co-worker. Mercury sure does get a bad rap when it takes a powder from business-as-usual.

But whether you like it or not, it goes retro 3 times a year, 3 weeks at a time. And when the cosmic traffic cop isn’t doing his normal job directing the flow of information, he’s chillin’. We should be, too.

During Mercury retrograde it’s time to slow down. To rethink, revise, reinvent, and recreate. Off-duty Mercury is a reminder to stop initiating and begin looking backwards at what we’ve already accomplished. Refine and redefine. Relax. I figure Mercury must be French, because it’s a requirement in that country to take time off.  Once it goes direct, it’s back in action, and you can “direct” your actions by initiating what you’ve been reflecting on during the retrograde phase: buy that new car or computer, have that important talk, sign the contract. If you’ve done your retrograde work, this can be a very rich and rewarding time.

If you want to know how Mercury retrograde can help you, get in touch and make an date for an Evolutionary Astrology reading. Meanwhile, following are the retro dates for 2010.

Mercury retrograde times for the rest of 2010:

8/20 (at 19 degrees Virgo, 4 minutes-9/12 (at 5 degrees Virgo 22 minutes)

12/10 (at 5 degrees Capricorn, 56 minutes)-12/29/10 (19 degrees Sagittarius 37 minutes)

The Rising Sign: Your Social Persona

What is the rising sign?  Literally, it’s where the sun was rising at dawn on the day you were born–hence, it’s how you “dawn” on people. It’s your style, both relational and in your “look.”  The rising sign (also known as the ascendant) guards your inner world, protecting those more private parts of you known only to intimates. If you’re doing your rising sign consciously, you have poise, confidence and savoir faire.

Throughout a lifetime, the rising sign changes 3 or 4 times, giving you a social makeover.  If you were born with sensitive, protective Cancer rising, for example, at some point it will change to expressive, outgoing Leo rising.  At first this will feel like a really bad idea. It’s awkward.  Your clothing selection may not suit you anymore. Your behavioral style changes. Friends notice. Ask them what for their honest opinions:  “You love me. Do I look dumb in this outfit?”  or “Did what I just said make sense to you?”  The new Leo rising may want you to present yourself with more flair and color.  When an edgy, passionate Aries rising moves into earthy, sensual Taurus rising, it’s natural to slow down and adopt a simpler, more comfortable style. Once you’ve adjusted to a rising sign change, you discover a new set of needs which correspond with boththe new sign and the planet that rules it.

Saturn Return: What Is It, Who Does It and When?

Born between November 17, 1977-September 20, 1980? You’re experiencing one of the most pivotal, life-changing astrological events of your life: the first Saturn return. When did it begin? September 3, 2007. It comes to a close on July 21, 2010.

Saturn is the planetary CEO. The Goal-Setter. The Timekeeper. At the time Saturn returns to the place and sign it was when you were born, it’s time to grow up–for real. The twenties are a vision quest, during which you make youthful mistakes and prepare to enter adulthood. In the later twenties, there is a sense of urgency. The need for direction. An awareness of responsibility, and the consequences of your actions.

The Saturn Return is a red-flag. It alerts you to the fact that you’ve matured beyond certain beliefs, attitudes and conditioning of family, culture and society . It’s a series of shocks: it heralds such life-altering events as marriage, divorce, becoming a parent, buying (or selling) a home, changing careers, leaving it all behind and traveling the world, developing a new philosophy.

How to optimize this experience? There is a certain ennui, or boredom, built in. A sense of stagnation. An urge to change things up in a way that reflects your entry into true adulthood. You must choose mountains to climb. Goals to reach. Worthy challenges to face. This requires faith and true grit. Meet these demands and Saturn helps you achieve them. What you achieve during this time lays the foundation of your life until the second Saturn return at approximately 57.

Fail the Saturn return and you fail yourself. I did this; I left my husband at 30 and began living the wild life I’d lived before in my 20’s. Before too long, it became obvious that my friends were settling down. Becoming adults. I was a big kid in a grownup’s body. It took a long time to get back on track–Saturn is the planet of karma. It will be patient for a long time, but then there is payback. On the heels of this realization, however, I began to devote myself to my astrology practice which, over 25 years, now thrives. If I had used my Saturn return time wisely, however, it would not have been such a long haul.

On October 31, 2009, those of you born from September 21, 1980-August 23, 1983 begin your Saturn return. It concludes on Oct 6, 2012. You’ll notice that yours overlaps with those a few years older than you. More about that later.
